Malia's Story:

On the afternoon of March 19th, Malia and her family were at a local gymnastics meet in San Jose rooting on Lanie, Malia's sister. Malia and Jenny (Malia's mom) were playing puzzles, board games and just having a great time outside enjoying a break from the competition. She wanted to run a lap around the grass and be timed. She ran her little heart out and wanted to have her own personal record. When she got back she was breathing heavy and started to complain that her head hurt. All she wanted to do was lay down. Malia became non-responsive and when she opened her eyes, Malia would throw up and even said she wanted to go to the doctors. Malia was transported to the local Hospital.

Once there, results from a CT scan came back that stated she had bleeding in the brain. It turned out she had an AVM (arteriovenous malformation), a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins in the brain. On March 21st, Malia underwent brain surgery to remove the AVM. After a 12-hour surgical day and two different procedures, Malia is now on her road to recovery.

Money raised will help the Hempels with medical expenses, as well as the time taken off work to be with Malia as she recovers. Doctors are estimating a recovery time of a year to 18 months.
